About Aracaju

Aracaju is the capital of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil, a coastal city near the mouth of the Sergipe River famous for Atalaia Beach and its long seafront promenade. Its top sights are the Atalaia seafront with the Passarela do Caranguejo and the turtle-shaped oceanarium, the riverside Praça Fausto Cardoso, the Palácio Olímpio Campos and the Museu da Gente Sergipana.

Aracaju grew from the village of Santo Antônio de Aracaju, first recorded in 1699 beside the Sergipe River; its name may come from the Tupi for cashew tree of the macaws. On 17 March 1855 the provincial president moved the capital here from inland São Cristóvão, and the engineer Pirro laid out the new city on a planned grid.

Today Aracaju is a city of about 600,000 people with one of the lowest costs of living among Brazil's capitals. From here, boats leave for the sandbanks of the Vaza-Barris, and day trips reach the colonial towns of São Cristóvão and Laranjeiras and the dunes of Mangue Seco.
