Allama Iqbal Library in Rawalpindi is situated on Murree Road near Liaquat Bagh. It offers a remarkable experience. During my first visit yesterday for thesis data collection. I was impressed by the extensive book collection and the tranquil atmosphere. The staff members were exceedingly helpful and cooperative. Previously known as the Rawalpindi Municipal Library, this public space, established 145 years ago, underwent a transformation, including a change in its name. Now named the Allama Iqbal Library, it occupies three kanals on Murree Road, adjacent to Liaquat Bagh. Following its refurbishment in 2018, funded partly by a World Bank loan and partly by the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) at a cost of Rs25 million, the library now boasts a comfortable environment, air conditioning, heating systems, expanded book collection, and internet access. In 2018, the former PML-N Punjab government secured a $150 million loan from the World Bank to enhance public infrastructure in five major cities, including Rawalpindi. The RMC, receiving its share of Rs250 million from this loan, decided to upgrade various facilities, including the Municipal Public Library. Established in 1873 with just two small rooms and 1000 books, the library has grown over the years, now boasting over 50,000 books, including a selection for competitive exams. Despite having 8,000 members, only 200 are active. The library's reconstruction in 2018, following the devastating flood in Leh Nullah in 2001, marked a significant milestone in its history. Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha initiated further improvements in 2024, aiming to enhance the library's interior and amenities based on student feedback. The library now offers various facilities, including six computers, student lockers, a children's room, and even complimentary tea for visitors, all aimed at fostering a culture of reading. With an average of 150 daily visitors, the library maintains a nominal membership fee of Rs250, with an annual renewal fee of Rs50. Further enhancements are planned to enrich the library's offerings and continue serving the community effectively.
