Why visit Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg was founded by settlers of the Adelsverein, a society that organized German emigration to Texas, under the leadership of John O. Meusebach. In 1847 Meusebach negotiated a treaty with Comanche leaders that allowed settlement to grow peacefully, an agreement remembered locally as one that was never broken.

That heritage still shapes the town, from the German names on storefronts to schnitzel on menus and an annual Oktoberfest.

Around town, the Hill Country unfolds in a landscape of granite domes, live oaks, rivers, vineyards and orchards. Fredericksburg makes an ideal base, with good restaurants and lodging and many day trips within a half-hour drive.

Main Street and the historic town

The center of Fredericksburg is easy to explore on foot, with most sights on or just off Main Street.

Main Street

Main Street stretches for blocks of shops, galleries, tasting rooms, bakeries and restaurants housed in nineteenth-century stone buildings. Look up at the carved details and date stones, and wander side streets to find historic homes.

This museum complex covers several acres in downtown Fredericksburg and is one of the most comprehensive museums anywhere on the war in the Pacific. The George H.W. Bush Gallery uses aircraft, vehicles, artifacts and oral histories to trace the conflict from Pearl Harbor to the surrender of Japan. The Admiral Nimitz Museum occupies the historic Nimitz Hotel, once run by the admiral's family, and the Japanese Garden of Peace was a gift from the people of Japan.

Best time to visit

Spring is the most beautiful season, with wildflowers from late March through April and comfortable temperatures.

Summer is hot, often in the high nineties Fahrenheit, but it is peach season and the best time for river swimming nearby.

Getting there and getting around

The closest major airports are San Antonio International Airport, about seventy miles to the southeast, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, about eighty miles to the east.

Downtown is walkable, and public parking lots near Main Street make it easy to leave your car for the day.

A suggested itinerary

First day

Start with breakfast pastries on Main Street, then visit the Pioneer Museum and the Vereins Kirche on the Marktplatz. Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of the Pacific War.

Second day

Hike Enchanted Rock in the early morning before the heat and crowds.

Third day

Drive to Stonewall to tour the LBJ Ranch and the living history farm at LBJ State Park, buying peaches at a roadside stand in season.

Practical tips

  • Reserve your Enchanted Rock day pass online, especially for weekends and holidays.
  • Book lodging well in advance for Oktoberfest, holiday weekends and spring wildflower season.
  • Make tasting reservations at wineries, as many limit walk-ins on weekends.
  • Use a designated driver, shuttle or tour when visiting several wineries.
  • Carry water and wear sun protection; Hill Country summers are hot and humid.
