About Rabat

Morocco's capital is the calmest of its royal cities, a place of wide boulevards, whitewashed lanes and Atlantic breezes at the mouth of the Bouregreg River. Its monuments span eight centuries: the Almohad Kasbah of the Udayas guarding the estuary, the unfinished Hassan Tower and its forest of column stumps, the Marinid necropolis of Chellah built over Roman Sala, and a twentieth-century new town that UNESCO listed together with the old city in 2012.

Rabat is easy to enjoy on foot. The medina is relaxed by Moroccan standards, the Rue des Consuls sells rugs and leather without much pressure, and the blue-and-white alleys of the kasbah lead to a garden and a terrace cafe above the river. Modern Rabat adds a national art museum, a striking riverside theatre and a busy tram network.

Spend two or three days, time a visit for the Mawazine music festival if you love live shows, and cross the river to Salé for a contrasting old town.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November; summers are mild by Moroccan standards thanks to the ocean
Ideal stay2-3 days
ArrivingRabat-Ville station has fast trains to Casablanca and the Al Boraq high-speed line to Tangier; Rabat-Salé Airport is just across the river
