About Pereira

Pereira is the capital of Risaralda Department and the largest city of Colombia's Coffee Axis, founded in 1863 in the foothills of the Central Cordillera of the Andes. With neighboring Dosquebradas and La Virginia it forms a metropolitan area of about 735,000 people, and its position in the center of the triangle formed by Bogotá, Medellín and Cali has made it a busy commercial city.

The region around it is part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In town, visitors meet the bold Bolívar Desnudo statue, the wooden dome of the cathedral, the viaduct over the Otún River and a lively nightlife. On 10 August 2026 a magnitude 7.4 earthquake centered in Chocó killed dozens in the metropolitan area, so check the status of sights before visiting.

Beyond the city, the Otún valley climbs from coffee farms and the hot springs of Santa Rosa de Cabal through misty Andean forest to the páramo of Los Nevados National Park, while coffee towns such as Marsella are among the best preserved in the region.
