About Chiclayo

Chiclayo is the capital of the Lambayeque region on the north coast of Peru, 13 kilometres from the Pacific and 770 kilometres north of Lima. Franciscan priests founded it in the 16th century as Santa María de los Valles de Chiclayo, a small stop for travellers, and in 1835 it was named the Heroic City for its part in the fight for independence. It now has the fourth largest metropolitan area in Peru, nicknamed the Capital of Friendship.

The valleys around it were home to the Moche and later the Sicán, or Lambayeque, culture, and the plains are dotted with eroded adobe pyramids. In 1987 archaeologists led by Walter Alva found the intact tomb of the Lord of Sipán, one of the great finds of American archaeology. Robert Prevost, later Pope Leo XIV, was Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.

Visits combine the cathedral and herb market in town with the museums of nearby Lambayeque and Ferreñafe, the pyramids of Túcume and the dry forest of Pómac. The beach at Pimentel lies 11 kilometres away, and arroz con pato, rice with duck, is the dish of the region.
