About Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara is a vast reserve of rolling savanna in southwestern Kenya, forming the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem across the Tanzanian border. Named for the Maasai people, whose pastoral lands surround it, and for the Mara River that winds through it, the reserve is known for exceptionally dense wildlife and broad, open plains that make animals easy to spot. It ranks among the most celebrated safari destinations in Africa.

The Great Migration reaches the Mara in the second half of the year, when wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River at well-known crossing points, often under the watch of crocodiles. Musiara Marsh, in the north, has long been associated with lion prides, while the Talek River and the central plains are rich in cheetahs and plains game. The Mara Triangle, managed separately on the western side of the river, is quieter and well maintained. In the southeast, Keekorok and the Sand River area hold resident wildlife all year. Balloon safaris lift off at dawn for a slow drift over the grasslands.

The private conservancies bordering the reserve limit vehicle numbers and allow activities such as walking safaris and night drives. Visits to Maasai villages and community projects offer insight into local life, and choosing respectful, community-run visits makes a difference. Wildlife is good year-round.

Best seasonJuly to October brings the migration and river crossings, though resident wildlife is excellent year-round.
Ideal stayThree to four days allows several game drives and time in both the reserve and a conservancy.
ArrivingMost visitors take short flights from Nairobi to Mara airstrips, though driving from Nairobi is also common.
