Mooresville is a lakeside town in Iredell County, about 30 minutes north of Charlotte on the shores of Lake Norman. It calls itself Race City USA because so many NASCAR teams and racing businesses are based here.

AT A GLANCE

April to October, for lake days, racing season and outdoor dining.

How long

One to two days covers the racing sights, downtown and the lake.

Getting there

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 40 minutes south.

Why visit Mooresville

Mooresville began as a railroad town in the 1870s and later grew around a large cotton mill. When Lake Norman was created in the 1960s, the town gained hundreds of miles of shoreline, and from the 1980s onward many racing teams moved here to be close to Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Today Mooresville mixes small-town charm with lake life and racing culture. It has a walkable historic downtown, a busy waterfront, and racing shops and museums that welcome fans.

Lake Norman

Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina.

Lake Norman State Park

Just north in Troutman, this state park has a sandy swimming beach, paddle boat rentals, campsites and more than 30 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.

Waterfront dining

Lakeside restaurants with docks let boaters pull up for lunch or dinner, and sunset over the water is one of the best things to do in town.

Downtown and family attractions

Mooresville has more to offer than racing and the lake.

Historic downtown

Main Street has restored brick buildings with local shops, restaurants and an old railroad depot, and it hosts festivals and concerts through the year.
