Why visit Boone and Blowing Rock

The appeal starts with the climate. At this elevation summer afternoons are often ten or more degrees cooler than in Charlotte or Raleigh, which is why wealthy families from the Piedmont built summer estates here more than a century ago.

The two towns complement each other. Boone has youthful energy, outfitters, breweries and coffee shops, plus a deep connection to Appalachian music; the late guitarist Doc Watson grew up in nearby Deep Gap and a statue of him stands on King Street.

Grandfather Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway

Grandfather Mountain

South of Blowing Rock near Linville, Grandfather Mountain is a privately run nature park managed by a nonprofit stewardship foundation. A winding road climbs to the summit area, where the Mile High Swinging Bridge spans a gap between two rocky peaks with views that stretch across the Blue Ridge on clear days.

For serious hikers, the rugged backcountry trails across the ridge are part of Grandfather Mountain State Park, which is separate from the attraction and includes ladder-assisted rock scrambles along the Grandfather Trail. These routes are strenuous and exposed, so start early and check weather first.

The Linn Cove Viaduct curves around the side of Grandfather Mountain on a series of precast concrete segments, an engineering solution that let the Parkway pass without blasting the fragile slope. Completed in 1987, it was the last link in the Parkway.

Best time to visit

Summer is the classic season, with cool mornings, warm afternoons and frequent thunderstorms.

Autumn is the busiest time.

Winter brings snow and ice, with skiing and snowboarding at Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock, Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. Sections of the Parkway close in bad weather, so always check conditions.

Getting there and getting around

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the most convenient major airport, about two hours away by car, mostly via US 321. Piedmont Triad International near Greensboro and Tri-Cities Airport in northeast Tennessee are other options.

A car is essential for exploring the region. Distances are short, but mountain roads are winding and slow, and fog can be thick at higher elevations.

A suggested itinerary

First day

Spend the morning in downtown Boone on King Street, then drive out to Valle Crucis for the Mast General Store and a walk in the community park.

Second day

Drive the Parkway south from Blowing Rock, stopping at Moses Cone for Flat Top Manor and the Bass Lake loop, then Price Lake.

Third day

Visit The Blowing Rock in the morning, then hike the Glen Burney Trail or browse Main Street and the art museum.

Practical tips

  • Book lodging months ahead for October weekends, graduation and Appalachian State home football games.
  • Check the National Park Service road status page for Blue Ridge Parkway closures before every drive.
  • Pack layers and a rain jacket, since temperatures drop quickly with elevation and afternoon storms are common.
  • Buy Grandfather Mountain tickets online and confirm current hours and fees on its official website.
  • Fill your fuel tank in town, as there are no gas stations on the Parkway itself.
  • Keep a safe distance from wildlife, including black bears, and store food securely when camping.
