Why visit Rocky Mount

Rocky Mount Mills, built in 1818 on the falls of the Tar River, was the second cotton mill in North Carolina and operated for more than 170 years. The Wilmington and Weldon Railroad arrived in the 1840s, and the city became a busy rail and tobacco center.

The city is the hometown of jazz musician Thelonious Monk and other notable figures, and its restored mill complex, arts center and riverfront trails make it a pleasant stop on Interstate 95.

The mills and downtown

Rocky Mount's revival is centered on its old mill and downtown.
