About Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest and best-known wildlife reserves, stretching along South Africa's northeastern border with Mozambique. Its landscapes range from dense bushveld in the south to open grasslands and mopane woodland farther north, crossed by rivers that draw animals through the dry months. The park is famous for the Big Five and supports a remarkable variety of birds, antelope and predators.

Self-driving is a popular way to explore, using a network of paved and gravel roads between fenced rest camps. In the south, the H4-1 river road between Skukuza and Lower Sabie is known for frequent sightings, and Sunset Dam near Lower Sabie often has hippos and crocodiles. Lake Panic Bird Hide, close to Skukuza, is a peaceful spot for birders, and the Mathekenyane viewpoint gives a broad view over the bush. The open plains around Satara, including the S100 gravel road, are associated with lions and other big cats. Olifants Rest Camp sits high above a river, and the Elephant Hall at Letaba displays enormous tusks.

The far north is wilder and less visited. Pafuri and Crooks Corner, where three countries meet, are prized by birders, and the Masorini and Thulamela sites reveal earlier human history. Gates close at night, so plan drives carefully. Malaria precautions are generally advised, and private reserves along the western edge offer guided game drives.

Best seasonThe dry winter months, roughly May to September, thin the vegetation and gather animals near water.
Ideal stayFour to five days allows the southern game roads plus a central or northern camp.
ArrivingMany travelers fly into Kruger Mpumalanga International or Skukuza, or drive from Johannesburg.
