Why visit Rocky Mount
Rocky Mount Mills, built in 1818 on the falls of the Tar River, was the second cotton mill in North Carolina and operated for more than 170 years. The Wilmington and Weldon Railroad arrived in the 1840s, and the city became a busy rail and tobacco center.
The city is the hometown of jazz musician Thelonious Monk and other notable figures, and its restored mill complex, arts center and riverfront trails make it a pleasant stop on Interstate 95.

Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences
Housed in a former tobacco processing complex, the Imperial Centre includes an art museum, a children's museum and science center, a planetarium and a community theater.

Historic downtown and the train station
Downtown's Main Street is split by the railroad tracks between two counties, and the restored 1893 Rocky Mount train station is still an Amtrak stop.

Food and local flavors
Rocky Mount is in the heart of eastern North Carolina barbecue country, where pork is cooked whole over wood and seasoned with vinegar and pepper. Fried chicken, collards, boiled potatoes and cornbread round out the plate.
The breweries and restaurants at Rocky Mount Mills have given the city a lively dining spot, and Southern diners and family restaurants remain local favorites.
