Visiting the Darbar Hazrat Baba Farid Ud Din Ganj E Shakar Chishti RA was an experience that left me with mixed feelings. The shrine, dedicated to the revered 13th-century Sufi mystic Baba Farid, holds historical and spiritual significance, with its white marble graves and the famous Bahishti Darwaza (Gate of Paradise) that opens during the annual Urs festival. The atmosphere is bustling, with shops selling cultural items and food distribution (langar) happening around the clock, which adds to the vibrancy of the place. However, much about Baba Farid’s life and legacy remains unclear, as historical details are scarce and often steeped in legend rather than fact. What’s more concerning is that many activities at the Darbar feel disconnected from the core teachings of Islam. The focus seems to have shifted to commercialization—vendors and caretakers appear more intent on profiting from visitors than fostering a spiritual environment. From persistent requests for donations to overpriced items at nearby shops, it feels like the sanctity of the shrine is overshadowed by a drive to extract money from pilgrims. While the Qawwali sessions and the mosque are notable, the overall experience can feel exploitative, which detracts from the spiritual essence one might expect. Visit with caution and focus on the historical aspect rather than expecting a purely religious experience.
